SharedOutlines

Update: the beta version of SharedOutlines is available here

We are testing the first beta release of this new Radio UserLand tool. This is how it works now. Almost everything might, and probably will, change

Two tools

To run SharedOutlines you will need:

  • SharedOutlines.root have to be installed on all clients
  • SharedOutlinesServer.root have to be installed on the server running "rcs"
  • You will also need at least two computer running Radio (remember: this is about sharing, you need somebody to share the outline with ).

On the server drop just the tool into the tools folder of Radio or Frontier, then set the path to the shared directory, this is where the http server will serve the opml files from. In my case, I'm running rcs on a MacOS X machine, so the path to the Apache directory is something like Macintosh HD:Library:WebServer:Documents:outlines:. This is mapped on the network as http://rcs.evectors.it/outlines/

On the client just drop the tool into the tools folder, switching to Radio you will find a new submenu in the Tools menu:

From the menu choose Open Shared Outlines List, you will get a brand new empty window like this:

Now, click on the New Outline button, and you'll be asked to enter a title for the newly created outline.

Type something in the new outline and close the window, saving the changes.

The new outline will appear in the Shared Outlines window, and you'll be able to see the contents of the outline simply double clicking on it. This works just like the Buddies Window of I/O, so the tool is polling all subscribed outlines and if they change the outlines title goes bold.

Now, go to the other client and open the Shared Outlines List.

Next, from the SharedOutlines menu, select Subscribe to Shared Outline and enter the url for the outline you have just created on the other client. In my case it will be: http://rcs.evectors.it/outlines/myFirstSharedOutline.opml

As expected, the outline's title will show up in your Shared Outlines List window, and after a few seconds it will go bold. Double clicking it will show the outline contents. So far, no big deal.

Now, here's where it gets interesting: select the outline and click the Edit Outline button.

You will notice that the wedges at the beginning of each line are red dots. This is because they belong to another user. You can not change or move these lines, but you can add you own lines.

To see who created the other lines, right-click on the line and in the first line of the pop-up menu you will see the email address of the author.

Now, close the window, walk back to the first client, select the shared outline and click the Edit Outline button.

The lines with the green wedges are the ones you created, and you can still edit them, while the red ones are the one created on the second editing session.

Next: repeat the process from the beginning.

So, this is it for now. If you are interested in this new tool, send me an e-mail Click here to send an email to the editor of this weblog. including in the first line how much would you pay for it ";->"
