Evectors' Intranet Services

This drawing illustrates from a logical point of view the services and how they connect on our LAN. From a technical one, we run different centralized services (Intranet, RCS, File Sharing) from different servers, mainly because we have plenty of servers to play with. Our "LAN" actually includes two network at two different locations, plus some partners IP addresses and a bunch of private fixed IP dial-up accounts, for people on the go. In a standard company deployement, all these services could be easily be run on a single and inexpensive server.

Intranet

This is one of the main sites of the whole system, it's completly based on IdeaTools, our own Frontier based CMS. On our Intranet site we have the following services:

  • News and stories about the company (ranging from Christmas party pictures to various public announcments).
  • Scheduling
    • Who's where is a events based system that shows where everybody is every day, in a navigable weekly wiew
    • Today Events shows a daily list of events
  • A small window, connected via XML to our accounting application, shows how much we have made so far
  • To Do Lists is a serie of outlines (that as of today are managed trough Radio/Frontier WebEdit suite) rendered in html. There's a to do list for each dept, plus a few more for big projects
  • News Aggregator - It looks like just Radio news aggregator, but it's centralized and feeds can be collected in a directory-like structures. Here we also aggregate feeds coming from news and competitor sites, scraped using our own RssDistiller tool.
  • Docs site - In another directory based system, we store all documentation, both internal and for our customers, about IdeaTools.
  • Discussion Groups - There are 2 discussion groups, one about new IdeaTools features, the other about customers.

K.logs

As any good and modern company, each of us has a Radio weblog, published on our RCS server. All weblogs can be accessed from our LAN and, trough a password authentication, from the rest of the Internet.

This weblogs is actually just a category of my "main" weblog wich is only internal.

We have set up a Categories policy to organize all contents produced in the k-logs, then different users or groups can set up specific categories to manage projects or personal blogs.

RCS Server

The RCS server manages the flow of contents coming from our weblogs. On the same server (running Radio) we have also installed RssDistiller, a simple tool that extracts rss feeds from regular web pages. All feeds are subscribed to the Intranet aggregator, single users can also add these feeds on their personal aggregators (this is how we keep an eye on competitors .

Other Services

Of course we use email and IM (different kinds, mostly ICQ but also Jabber, AIM and Yahoo).

Recently we have started using Instant Outliners. So far it's proving a very interesting approach.

Finally we have a Trouble Ticketing application (another IdeaTools suite) that we use to manage relations with our customers.
