ThemeTool group on Yahoo!
Leslie Booth, one of the very first ThemeTool users, has created a group on Yahoo to discuss ThemeTool usage and development! That's great!

Here's the RSS feed.

Instant outlining is cool
I played a little with OPML (uh... the tool, not the XML standard). Now I remember that instant outlining is cool. Some more feedback on my OPML blog.
A name's a name
Doc: Not only this, but "vista," I just learned, means "chicken" in Latvian.

Makes sense: since Apple already booked all cats names (Panthers, Jaguars, Tigers, etc.), Microsoft is turning to birds. "Windows 2006 Chicken", it feels familiar and not threatening. To compete with MacOS X Lion we'll get "Windows 2010 Turkey"...

ThemeTool free (as in free beer)
A few years ago we wrote a Radio UserLand tool to make theme design easier by using standard html editing tools like Dreamwearver or GoLive and we decided to try to sell the tool in order to make some money which would allow us to support and keep developing it.

We did sell a few but not enough to keep us developing it (many other things happened meanwhile, including the fact that our company shrank significantly).

We kept offering the tool until a few weeks ago when we had a brakdown on one of our servers and the registration process of the tool was broken. Curiously in the same days we had a spike of downloads and a few people complained about the fact that they could not activate the tool.

Since the customer is always right (and it was true in this case), we decided that the best thing we could do was making the tool freely available for everybody. You can download a free and open version of the tool here. It doesn't require any registration and all the code is included. I don't have the time to figure out what license to use to distribute it: let's say that you can do anything you like with it and we will not be responsible and not provide support.

You can find some basic instructions here.

Finally the DLA
Marc Canter:
tomorrow it'll be official - we're building a DLA (digital lifestyle aggregator.) The GoingOn Network. It'll feature:
  • a Meta-Network of hosted networks - join one or create your own!
  • micro-content publishing (Blog, Events, Reviews, AudBlogging, Vlogging, Lists, People and Group Showcases....) - in both microformats and feeds.
  • template based system (AlwaysOn Network, Superblogger & others)
  • subscribe to a person - with access controls and filters for both subscriber and subscribee
  • digital identity hub
  • open standards (media, photos, microformats, lists, events, links, playlists, etc.)
  • highly customizable - Gutter blocks
This is it folks - what I've been dreaming about - for years.
Everybody can confirm that Marc has been trying to get here for many years, with many partners, in many different parts of the world. I was part of some of these early experiments, which maybe didn't go very far but I learned a lot from them.

Congratulations dude. Seriously. :-)

Bloglines blues
Woke up this morning and all my feeds are gone
Oh yeah, I woke up this morning, and all of my feeds are gone
I have nothin' left to read, I feel I can go home.
Apparently Bloglines lost all my subscriptions. The web site is responding as usual and currently there are no messages on the home page. A quick search on Technorati reveals that I'm not alone.

I like Bloglines but I have an OPML backup of my subscriptions, I could be gone in minutes if needed.

PS: 7 hours later, bloglines seems to be back. :-)

Mac vs. Windows
Last week Matt was blaming me for his new toy, a 12" PowerBook.

I have been using Macs since the very beginning and I did spend my time in the holy war against Windows but now I feel it's over, I'm done with it: everybody should be free to use the OS they feel more comfortable with, I'm not trying to convice anybody to switch anymore.

Well... maybe a little from time to time.

Oh dear, no, it's true, I admit it, I'm still a fundamentalist!

Every time I spend some time using a Windows computer I wonder how can people actually get stuff done in that environment. I keep showing my friends how cool my computer and my OS is. I get excited at MacWorld keynotes and install as soon as possible new versions of the operating system which will probably break something but offer some new extra cool feature. Our operating system is superior, we don't get the worms, viruses and bugs that Windows users get and we live an happy creative life, Apple changed my life sending me back to study music only because the bundled Garage Band with their stuff.

Phew...

I feel much better admitting it :-)

Missed opportunity to shut up
Loïc is commenting about John Gibson's article titled Missed Opportunity. It's amazing how this kind a crap can get published.

But it get worst: a couple of posts later Loïc links a this post by Dennis Howlett where he says that high profile non US bloggers might run the risk of not being allowed to enter the US if they criticize US media (and are thus considered anti-american).

I have a few friends who have had pretty bad experiences with the US immigration and I can't dismiss this option as impossible: it could actually be a plausible scenario.

It's sick.
