In The Beginning Was The Intranet Site

Traditional approach: a central intranet server, usually operated by the IT department, where all users access the same data.

Department level intranet sites created for smaller group of users, needing specific applications.

K-log oriented network, where every single user is actually operating a personal intranet site.

Of course, all other services still exist and are still needed. All servers and clients are linked via web services or syndication protocols.
